Textile Colour Strategy

Textile Colour Strategy

Colour is the central element of the project to update the B&B Italia and Maxalto upholstery Collection. B&B Italia focused on the most strategic fabrics in the collection adding new colourways to their colour range and creating new and more complete palettes in line with the latest worldwide trends. An important and extensive study carried out by B&B Italia for almost a year with a complete analysis of the entire fabric collection has given birth to 140 new colours, giving a total of 450 fabrics and 92 leather colours.

The starting point for the new B&B Italia and Maxalto palettes is a natural and neutral colour base that includes beige and grey tones which are common to both brands. The inspiration comes from the nature and the natural shades. They then focus on two different colour schemes created for B&B and Maxalto in line with their brand identities and the image that they want to convey. The B&B Italia colour pallet tends towards more contemporary tones that conveying a sense of design, and cutting edge trends. While the Maxalto palette is consistent with the contemporary classic pallet that distinguishes the brand and uses more luxurious and richer colours that express a timeless elegance.

The New B&B Italia Palette

The new B&B Italia’s colour palette, inspired by its innovative and cutting-edge nature, is both contemporary and modern, focusing on the trendiest and most captivating tones. Yellows tend to camel hues; greens to khaki and petrol (nuance that has a dedicated place in the collection); reds tend to terracotta, but have also several rose shades, and finally blue, that is present in all the different tones of navy blue.
To better understand the result of the work and study made to implement B&B Italia fabric and leather upholstery collection it is useful to mention some examples and observe where the main changes have been implemented.

LODI, a very fresh fabric with a natural, casual and vintage effect, whose texture creates the real essence and soul of linen. There are a total of 14 colourways they focus on light and fresh tones (like white and sand), passing through pastel shades (like Primrose Pink) and reaching darker tones (characterized by greys), where freshness remains a constant. The fabric ADRIA, structured and full-textured, where a high Viscose content makes it soft and bright, is available in 12 colours, among which we can find more neutral tones ( like white, sand and grey) and stronger and deeper ones, like bordeaux, greens (they include several tones of petrol green and an intense forest green) and blues.

The project to update the collection also extended to the leather collection that are integrated within the B&B Italia fabrics collection. It is important to mention the GAMMA leather range as an example of the perfect and complete integration of this colour strategy. In this palette, where the range was extended with the introduction of 9 new colours. All of the tones are carefully researched and developed in line with the current trends. Many tones have been introduced as a result of the extensive study by Peclèrs, a French company specializing in trends: from the more neutral ones (like greys, sand and browns), that have always been part of the collection, to the trendiest ones, like terracotta, blue navy, khaki and petrol green.

The New Maxalto Palette

The new Maxalto’s colour palette has been designed to express the contemporary classic image of the brand. Compared to B&B Italia’s palette this includes more classical, but at the same time richer and more intense colours. The chosen tones, among which there are bright blues, purple and bronzed gold, convey Maxalto’s contemporary nature highlighting its timeless extreme elegance. To have a clear and visual idea of the new colour pallet the refined and polished fabrics, SAMARA and ELETTRA, are a perfect example.

SAMARA is a velvet available in 10 strong and very bright shades . Each colour tone shows a strong personality. Among them an intense purple, a precious blue and a bright petrol green stand out. While, the fabric ELETTRA presents a cooler colour palette that includes more classical tones , focused on greys, ivory and black, but also some more refined ones, like bronzed gold and light blue.

B&B Italia - New Products, New Shades

The new colour approach can also be found in the 2019 products, for which new colours requested by the designers have been introduced. They were looking for a material component which enables them to present their product in the best way possible. While looking at the B&B Italia collection we can mention the new Dock sofa system designed by Piero Lissoni. The collaboration with the designer lead to the introduction of new fabrics like AIACE and SALEMI. These fabrics have a very fresh look and are available in several colours that are mostly focused on neutral tones with a natural spirit, like rope and sage green. To complete the chromatic scale there is SIRTAKI a new materic texture with a rich look.

While looking at the Maxalto Collection the most relevant examples are the upholstery created for the Apollo sofa system and the Dike bed, both designed by Antonio Citterio.

The new Maxalto Dike bed is distinguished by its unusually-sizedheadboard which is a distinctive element that creates a new element for bedrooms. This headboard is made even more sophisticated by the fabric used for the upholstery. Dike introduces MAYA, an especially designed fabric, with a pronounced three-dimensional texture similar to a woven horizontal tapestry creating light and shade visual effects which fade gently into each other. The new fabric has been introduced in two neutral hues, beige and grey.
