The Nature of Design @ B&B Italia London
B&B Italia celebrates the Uk debut of its new projects for 2017 and announces its partnership with Arclinea in a completely renovated store.
The restyling project –by the Antonio Citterio Patricia Viel studio – at the prestigious flagship store B&B Italia London, opened in 2001 in Brompton Road, unveiled a new exhibition concept that encompasses new spaces devoted to Arclinea, creating a close link between the kitchen and the living room. The building’s architectural features designed by John Pawson and the beautiful high ceilings emphasise the exhibition concept, now renewed with the introduction of a large winter garden, forming the backdrop to a a striking display of B&B Italia and Maxalto furnishings. At the centre of the store stands a new “working area” with samples of finishes and large format fabrics, as well as a configurator allowing users to view their customised products. A fluid sequence of spaces, lit up by a new and efficient LED track lighting system by Flos, accompanies visitors as they visit the store, conjuring up evocative atmospheres, inspirations and emotions
In this surprising scenario, B&B Italia has seized the spirit of the moment, experimenting with new product combinations and creating new design alliances.
The main window premières SAKé, the seating system with a strong contemporary design that marked the beginning of the company’s collaboration with Piero Lissoni, and Convivium, the scenic kitchen by Arclinea, designed by Antonio Citterio and featuring a central 4.5m island, which integrates into the living area and interacts harmoniously with the Maxalto furnishings. A wooden freestanding “storage unit”, serving the adjacent spaces, acts as a link between the living area and the kitchen area.
The launch of Arclinea in the prestigious London store marks the roll-out of the strategic partnership that B&B Italia formed last September with the kitchen manufacturer, founded on the common values of design, innovation and quality. The high-end kitchens from the Arclinea range perfectly complement the B&B Italia and Maxalto collections, integrating seamlessly into the London store. The product compatibility lies in the similar industrial production approach behind all three brands which continuously strives for excellence.
During the London Design Festival, the entire store will be transformed into a privileged stage to present the new 2017 collections from B&B Italia and Maxalto, in addition to new kitchen environments from Arclinea.
Charles 20, the special 20th anniversary edition of the best-selling seating system designed by Antonio Citterio in 1997, will be presented through a scenic installation by Migliore + Servetto Architects. The sofa, framed in an eye-catching graphic background, is a constant protagonist in the events, scientific discoveries and technological advances that took place during the twenty years after it was created. Also by Antonio Citterio are the Alex tables, with a characteristic tripod base connected with crosspieces, in different shapes and finishes, and the Jens chairs, which interpret the classic design of Chinese chairs in a contemporary style, rediscovering the artisan processes of turned and curved wood.
Mario Bellini presents Bolt Table, a sculptural, highly textured table featuring a drawn steel frame, which holds a round transparent glass top. Naoto Fukasawa, instead, presents the Harbor armchairs, another step in his study of inverted truncated cone shapes. Monica Armani has designed the Madison mirrors, in two large shapes, inspired by the style icons of the ’50s and ‘60s.
The B&B Italia Outdoor collection, which is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year, is enriched with Tobi-Ishi Outdoor, a new outdoor version in cement of the iconic table by the British design duo, Barber & Osgerby.
New arrivals for the Maxalto collections, designed and coordinated by Antonio Citterio, include the Astrum tables and Caratos chairs. The round and rectangular tables feature a die cast aluminium tripod base and tops in wood and marble. The chairs stand out for their basic light design underscored by a die cast aluminium frame.
Dynamism, stylistic contamination and creativity are the three key words to interpreting this scenario, which will create new domestic landscapes in the near future, both indoors and out.
