STEPHEN BURKS | DESIGNER EN

Stephen Burks was born in Chicago in 1969. He graduated from the Illinois Institute of Technology in 1992 with a Bachelor of Science in Design and studied architecture at Columbia University's Graduate School of Architecture. In 1997, he founded his New York studio Readymade Projects for design direction on projects ranging from retail interiors, exhibitions, packaging, lighting, furniture and home accessories. Stephen has developed products for Artecnica, Boffi, Calvin Klein, Cappellini, Estee Lauder and Missoni, as well as working Aid To Artisans in the developing world with local crafts people. He has consistently been the first African-American industrial designer to ever collaborate with these companies. In 1999, he founded the first guide to the off-site events of the International Contemporary Furniture Fair and became the first coordinator for Interni magazine’s design guide, New York Inside Out. In 2007, he served on the trend board of the Cologne Furniture Fair and juried the Cooper-Hewitt Smithsonian Institution’s National Design Awards. Stephen’s projects have been exhibited at the ICFF in New York, Tokyo Design Week, the Salone del Mobile in Milan, the Victoria & Albert Museum and the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum. In 2006, his first solo exhibition Stephen Burks; Readymade Projects opened at the Knoxville Museum of Art and in 2007 he was featured in the Chicago Museum of Science and Industry’s exhibition Designs For Life. Most recently, Stephen was the recipient of a Professional Achievement Award from the Illinois Institute of Technology.
